Message	from the ECU and decides whether or not to pass that signal on to the injectors. so, basically, there's almost no fuel in the cylinder for that cycle. so, lots of air + NOS in the cylinder, but no fuel means that it's "lean", but it's leaned out past the point of it possibly igniting.
